Steak, Lobster & Co. is a relatively new restaurant in the seaside town of Felixstowe, Suffolk. We’d walked past a number of times and always wondered what it would be like.
One recent Saturday evening we booked in to try for ourselves. We had booked in person, earlier in the week and found the staff to be welcoming so we hoped for a good night.
And we got one! The focused menu offers just a handful of dishes – done well. Lobster (half or whole) , Steak, Surf n’ Turf, Pork and Lamb. For veggies there was Mac & Cheese, Haloumi Burger and Veggie Chilli.
We chose to sit downstairs between the bar and the open kitchen, which gave us a great view of the buzzing restaurant, but not much view of the sea just across the road. Next time we will try the first floor dining area which has floor to ceiling windows for a cracking view.
Local Lobster, Freshly Caught
We asked our smiling server where the lobster came from. She pointed across the road to the sea – a good sign. You can get larger lobsters in other local restaurants but these are not flow in from abroad.
The compact wine list included a pale Provence Rosé which is always a winner.
Service was quick and the food was hot. Our starters were delicious – I chose the Prawn Cocktail, Katherine had the baked Camembert. Both portions were large – the prawns juicy and the cheese plenty big enough to share.
For mains, we both opted for half lobster and chips. The lobster was small but fresh and delicious. The scooped out lobster meant we weren’t fiddling with picks and pokes to get to the meat. The chips were fat, hot and cooked all the way through.
I can’t recall if we had dessert, the wine was slipping down too well.
This was a great meal, the service was excellent – really positive and friendly. Despite a very busy restaurant, we had excellent service, making us all feel attended to.
The only off note was the music – a subjective issue but one that matters to me. We entered to the sounds of Mustang Sally (or similar) through a collection of songs including ‘In the Air Tonight’ before the playlist started again. In my personal opinion, a chilled soundtrack could really add a cool vibe to the already great restaurant.
I’ve started a Spotify playlist to share next time I dine there!
NB Steak, Lobster & Co. is an independent local restaurant. Don’t confuse it with the Steak & Lobster chain you may know.
